Dear Jerry,

My wife, Robin, and I as recent graduates of your Street Smart Course want to extend a hearty "Well Done" and "Thank You" for giving us the tools and confidence to be able to better defend ourselves than ever before. I learned more practical information and useful techniques in your four week course than I did as a Naval Officer with a career spanning twenty years. I no longer consider the larger size of an opponent to be intimidating understanding now that attitude, surprise, and good technique can put me in a decided advantage. I am looking forward to carrying it to the next level as I enter your next course of study.

Again, Thanks, and I look forward to being under your instruction again soon.

Dear Jerry,

I would like to thank you and to share my experience and impressions after attending your basic self defense class," Street Smart."

Why did I choose to enroll myself and why did my son join me? What benefits did we receive? Who would benefit from it? I hope my experience and impressions would help others who may have similar questions, as they decide whether or not to enroll.

My experience in Martial Arts started when I was seven, learning Judo and throughout my teens and young adult life learning multiple self defense disciplines in Asia. Today, as a senior citizen and having been away from practicing martial arts for over 15 years, I wanted to update myself on the latest information on the "street" environment and get back in shape. After checking around, applying due diligence and talking to you, Jerry, I decided this would be a good place to start. I also mentioned this to my son who was on college break. He too has had prior martial arts experience. In spite of his heavy college load and precious time off, he carefully weighed the merits and decided to join me.

After completing the two days a week, four-week Course, we both concluded it was worth the time and money if and this "IF" is very important.

1. You take it seriously
2. You participate fully
3. You practice, practice, practice

I commend you Jerry for your professionalism and no-nonsense style while teaching this course. I also thank all those who took the course with me for their friendship and for willingly sharing their experiences and skills that made this course more valuable. All in all, I believe we received more than we gave. We had members with backgrounds in law enforcement, physical fitness profession, country singers and musicians, information technology professionals, financial service professionals, martial arts professionals, college students and senior citizens!

Looking back several months later, having lost 30 pounds and on my way back to physical fitness, I believe the money spent was well worth it, above all the friendship gained and the time spent with my son - PRICELESS! If anyone has questions and wishes to speak with me, don't hesitate to have them call me. Thank you again Jerry, for giving of yourself, you're a great American!

Your new friend for life,

V. Douglas

Jerry Dean and all others interested in Street Smart Self Defense:

My dad had done business with Jerry Dean and knew of his self defense classes. So being the protective father that he is he signed my mother and me up for the class. Our last self defense class had taught us to scream, kick a guy in the crotch and run away really fast. So in a way, I suppose we were expecting the same from this class as well. Boy, were we ever wrong! We found ourselves in a hand to hand combat, "stand up and fight like a man" class. I realized that Jerry Dean was teaching us to defend ourselves as human beings, who have as much right to life as the next guy; we are not going to be victims.

After finishing the class life went on. I am a full time student who likes to earn money. I took a job that I never in a million years would have imagined myself in. I now work as an event security guard. My family didn't believe me when I told them of my new job, and understandably so. I am about 5'4" and weigh around 120, pretty meek and not very loud or even vocal for that matter.

I worked my first concert and it went off without a hitch. No one really bothered me, and I went home feeling like pretty good. The next night was another story. The venue sold out of alcohol within the first two hours of the concert and the house was packed. I was checking tickets at the entrance to the 'pit' in front of the stage. A few people tried to get down there without proper tickets. I was nice about it and just told them to go back to their seats, and most everyone was pretty cool about it, and just turned around and walked off. But there was one gentleman in particular that had a problem going back to his seat. He tried to push past me four times and each time I managed to push him back. The man was obviously intoxicated and he kept trying to get by. He put his hand up like he was going to grab my chest. Almost instinctively I grabbed his hand and put him in the thumb hold that Mr. Dean had taught me and held him there until a male guard came and escorted him out of the venue.

Without the teachings of Mr. Dean I would not have been able to take care of myself in that situation, as a matter of fact I would not have even taken the job. Since taking the class I feel more confident in my ability to protect myself. I walk through the parking garage at school at night and do not feel scared. I am more aware of my surroundings. The class has added to my self-esteem and confidence, and I know the skills I have learned could help me save my life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Dear Jerry,

I wanted to write you a letter to tell you how much I appreciated your Street Smart Hand-to-Hand Self Defense course. I really did not know what to expect the first evening I arrived for the training. In our class, there was a man and his girlfriend, a mother and her teenage daughter, an eight-year marine veteran, and me.

What transpired over the next 4 weeks was an incredible experience. I want to commend you on your instruction from the teenager to a couple of big ugly guys and the way you dealt with each of us at our own level. You were very careful in every detail with lots of cautions, warnings and repetitions along the way. It was an enjoyable blend of seriousness mixed with some comic relief and enhanced by your own personal experiences. The stretching exercises and weight training were an added bonus as was the printed material you gave us with each of the eight lessons.

Upon completion of your course, what I came away with is the knowledge and confidence of how to defend myself against an aggressor in a number of different ways. Although I did not master every technique, there were several techniques I learned where I feel completely capable of using when facing a belligerent bully or someone trying to intimidate me with a weapon. I highly recommend your course to anyone who would like to learn how to defend themselves in threatening situations and the confidence that automatically comes with this type of training.

Please use me as a reference for your course if ever needed. Thank you Jerry!

Jerry Dean

I recently finished a Basic course, instructed by Louie Jara. The class was small, which appealed to me because I knew I was getting full attention from Louie. It was physically tougher than I thought it would be; I think Louie enjoyed himself. But it was truly good for me, and I am glad for it.

I believe I really benefitted from the class. I now know several moves to defend myself and subdue an attacker. Just as importantly, I learned the right attitude to have in such a situation - to respond with aggression if I can't avoid it altogether. This is the very thing a person should have decided before such an incident ever occurs, and I am glad this was included in his instruction.

Louie was very patient, and ensured we executed each maneuver properly - "almost right" was not good enough, and he insisted we learn each of them correctly. Not only was he patient, but he consistently presented a firm and pleasant attitude that made it enjoyable to be in the class. His training gave me the confidence to know I could decisively defend myself in many situations.

The manuevers we learned will be effective even on a large and powerful person. As was stated in the class several times, it is always best to avoid a physical confrontation, and I will always look for that answer first. But whether I can avoid it or not, I know I will not expect to lose.

Thank you for making this training available; it is very beneficial. I hope to be able to take the A-1 class in the future, as my work schedule allows.
